Information on Pepto-Bismol
Before taking Pepto-Bismol, it is important to read the usage instructions and important warnings.
What Conditions Can Pepto-Bismol Treat?
The following symptoms may be treated with Pepto-Bismol:
  • Stomach pain and burning
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea and excess gas
Both the tablets and the suspension of Pepto-Bismol contain bismuth subsalicylate. This ingredient's precise mechanism of action is unknown, but it has been shown to have multiple actions in the gut. It appears to coat the irritated stomach and intestinal tissue, thereby decreasing inflammation and reducing irritation levels. It also reduces the amount of gastric juice your body makes and kills bacteria, including E. coli, which helps stop diarrhea. Ensure that the bottle of Pepto-Bismol suspension has been vigorously shaken before use. When necessary, adults older than 16 should take 30ml of Pepto-Bismol liquid or two Pepto-Bismol tablets. No more than eight doses may be administered within 24 hours. Stop using it right away and call your doctor if you don't feel better after two days. Salicylate-containing medicines, like Pepto-Bismol, should not be given to children under the age of 16 unless a doctor says so.
How Is Pepto-Bismol Taken?
For those who are 16 years of age and older, Pepto-Bismol can be taken as a 30mL solution or 2 tablets. If symptoms still persist, you may retake the same dose every 30 minutes to 1 hour. The maximum dose is eight doses a day.
What Are the Adverse Effects of Pepto-Bismol?
Pepto-Bismol has the potential to cause side effects just like any other medication.
