What is Femoston? 

Femoston is a type of combination Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) that is suitable for postmenopausal women. This medicine contains progesterone and oestrogen, two female sex hormones. Combination HRT is very effective in subduing symptoms of premenopause and menopause.  During the stages of menopause, the ovaries stop producing the levels of oestrogen that they used to, resulting in decreased levels of natural oestrogen. This can cause uncomfortable symptoms.  Femoston is used to relieve postmenopausal symptoms such as:

How does Femoston work? 

Femoston works to reduce menopause symptoms and prevent osteoporosis by replacing the decreased oestrogen levels. This medicine is available as either Femoston Conti or Conti-Low.   Both these versions of Femoston are combined HRT that contains estradiol and dydrogesterone, synthetic versions of the hormones progesterone and oestrogen.   Femoston Conti contains both dydrogesterone and estradiol and is taken daily with a break. This medication is prescribed to postmenopausal women with intact uteruses but who have not had a natural menstrual bleed for at least 12 months.  Femosin Conti-Low contains a pack of 14 tablets of estradiol and 14 tablets that contain both estradiol and dydrogesterone. This medication works by using synthetic hormones to mimic the body’s natural menstrual cycle. This reduces the symptoms experienced with menopause. 

Dosage and how to use

Femoston tablets come in a 28-day pack. One tablet is taken daily according to the order marked on the pack. The first half of the pack is marked with arrow 1, and the second part is marked with arrow 2.  Once you have finished the 28-day pack, you should start the next pack the following day without a break. Your HRT should be reviewed by your doctor annually.  The tablets should be taken orally, with a drink, and with or without food. You should try taking the tablet every day at the same time.  If you miss a dose, you can take the missed dose if it is less than 12 hours of the time you usually take it. If you remember your missed dose more than 12 hours after you were meant to take it, leave it and take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take a double dose.
