What is Lansoprazole and What is it Used For?
Lansoprazole capsules are an over-the-counter treatment for heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers in adults over the age of 18. These symptoms are alleviated by inhibiting stomach acid production. Heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers are treated with Lansoprazole and other proton pump inhibitors. Zoton is the trade name for these capsules, which come in 15mg and 30mg strengths.
What are Acid Reflux and Heartburn?
Stomach acids are essential to the digestive process because they break down food before it reaches the intestines. The esophageal sphincter normally protects the esophagus from these acids. This sphincter is made up of a group of muscles that form a one-way valve that allows food to enter while preventing stomach acids from escaping. Acid reflux happens when this sphincter relaxes, allowing stomach acid to pass through and into the esophagus. Heartburn is caused by acid reflux, which occurs when acid burns the esophageal tissues. Despite its name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It gets its name from the fact that the burning sensation occurs in the chest.
How does it all Work?
Some of us will occasionally experience heartburn, but those with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD in the UK and GERD in the US) will likely experience these symptoms frequently. GORD as well as a few other conditions, including stomach ulcers and esophagitis, is treated with lansoprazole. It is a prescription medication that decreases the activity of proton pumps to reduce stomach acid production (proteins that create acid in the stomach). Reducing the amount of acid in the stomach reduces acid reflux and its associated symptoms.
Substitutes to Buy Lansoprazole
Antacids are alkaline liquids or tablets that neutralize stomach acid to relieve symptoms of acid reflux. Antacids such as Gaviscon are available over the counter at The Independent Pharmacy. They may reduce Lansoprazole's effectiveness, so they should not be taken within one hour of each other. Please visit our Advice for Acid Reflux & Heartburn page for more information about alternative prescription and over-the-counter treatments.
Ways to Alleviate Acid Reflux in the Absence of Medication
  •       Obesity is the primary cause of GORD. This is because excess fat puts strain on organs such as the stomach. The increased pressure forces stomach acid into the esophagus via the weakened sphincter. As a result, attempting to lose weight can sometimes improve symptoms.
  •       GORD is a common condition that affects approximately 20% of the population. Symptoms are likely to be more severe when lying down. It is advised to avoid lying down horizontally after eating and to sleep on an incline.
  •       Consider eating smaller portions that don't leave you bloated and full.
  •       Eating large meals that fill the stomach has the same effect as being overweight.
  •       Avoid acidic and spicy foods in addition to fatty foods. For example, onions and peppers. Carbonated, alcoholic, and caffeinated beverages should be avoided in addition to certain foods because they can cause heartburn.
  •       A variety of medications have the potential to impair digestion, increasing the risk of GORD. Consult your doctor if you suspect that the medication you are taking is causing your GORD symptoms.
