What are Evorel Conti Patches?
Evorel Conti Patches are described as a "continuous combined" Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), as they contain both estradiol and norethisterone. These patches are used for women experiencing menopause (who have not had a menstrual period for 18 months) to reduce symptoms and prevent osteoporosis.  Menopause usually occurs in all women between the ages of 44 to 55. As you approach this age, the ovaries produce less oestrogen. The lower levels of oestrogen stop the menstrual cycle; however, the changes in hormone levels can cause uncomfortable symptoms.  Common symptoms of menopause:
  • Dryness of the vagina, eyes, or mouth
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Depression
Each Evorel Conti patch slowly releases the two active ingredients, norethisterone, and estradiol, which are synthetic versions of the female sex hormones progesterone and oestrogen. Evorel patches are placed on the skin and changed twice a week.  One week without HRT treatment is recommended if you are switching between HRT products.
How do Evorel Conti Patches work?
Everol Conti patches are a continuous combined HRT treatment, as both hormones (estradiol and norethisterone) in the patch are released at the same time. The estradiol patches replace the oestrogen that the ovaries are no longer producing. In women who still have a womb, regular treatment of the oestrogen hormone may cause the lining of the womb to thicken. This is why norethisterone (synthetic progesterone) is added, to help shed the womb's lining and stop an excess buildup.  When using Evorel Conti, most women will not have a regular monthly menstrual cycle. However, spotting or bleeding may occur in the first few months of use.
Dosage and how to use
Buy Evorel Conti patches are for transdermal (on the skin) only. Evorel Conti patches contain 3.2mg estradiol hemihydrate and 11.2mg norethisterone acetate. Once applied, the patch will slowly release 50mcg estradiol and 170mcg norethisterone daily.  One patch should be applied to the skin, either located on the hips or buttocks. It is important to change the area where the patch is applied, making sure not to apply the patch on the same skin area. The patch should be worn continuously without a break until it is time to replace it. Evorel Conti patches are changed twice a week
Side effects and precautions
Like any medication, Evorel Conti may cause some side effects, although not everyone may experience them. Side effects may include:
  • Breast pain
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Inflamed or itchy skin where the patch has been applied
  • Joint pain
  • Weight gain
  • Breakthrough bleeding
  • Diarrhoea
  • Mood swings
  • Stomach pain
Hormone Replacement Therapy may increase the risk of developing breast cancer. The length of HRT treatment affects the level of risk of developing breast cancer. It is thus important to check your breasts regularly for noticeable lumps or changes to the nipple or skin. If you have used HRT for more than five years, there may be a small risk of developing ovarian cancer.  If you are concerned about any side effects or if the patches can affect you in any other way, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before or during use.    Sources: https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/10929/pil#:~:text=Evorel%20Conti%20patches%20replace%20the,build%20up%20and%20get%20thicker.&text=Most%20women%20do%20not%20have%20a%20regular%20monthly%20period%20with%20Evorel%20Conti. https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/10929/smpc https://www.webmd.com/menopause/guide/menopause-hormone-therapy#091e9c5e80008b3b-1-2 https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-6024/norethindrone-acetate-oral/details https://go.drugbank.com/salts/DBSALT001383 https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/estrogens-effects-on-the-female-body https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a604017.html#:~:text=Progesterone%20is%20in%20a%20class,that%20some%20women%20are%20missing. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt/risks/#:~:text=Combined%20HRT%20can%20be%20associated,if%20you're%20taking%20HRT. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt/types/#:~:text=Continuous%20combined%20HRT%20is%20usually,every%20day%20without%20a%20break.
