What is Macrobid?
Macrobid is an antibiotic that contains the active ingredient nitrofurantoin. This antibiotic effectively treats UTIs, such as cystitis, caused by bacterial infections. Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria (most commonly E.coli) enter the urethra and travel into the bladder when it reproduces. Common symptoms of UTIs include:- Strong-smelling or cloudy urine
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- A burning sensation or pain when passing urine
- The need to urinate more frequently and urgently
How does Macrobid work?
When a bacterial infection occurs in the bladder, it causes inflammation of the bladder wall. Antibiotics are prescribed to stop the bacteria from reproducing, giving your immune system the chance to kill the bacteria. The active ingredient, nitrofurantoin, filters from the bloodstream into the urine quickly, allowing the nitrofurantoin to concentrate at the site of the infection (bladder and urinary tract). Symptoms should improve or subside in the first 24 hours after taking Macrobid, with the infection clearing entirely after three days. If symptoms of cystitis do not improve or they worsen, contact your doctor. It is crucial to finish your antibiotic course, even if you feel better, as this will prevent the bacteria causing the UTI from becoming resistant to the antibiotics.Dosage and how to use
It is essential to follow your doctor's instructions when taking Macrobid. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if you have any questions about your dosage or length of treatment. Macrobid tablets are available in 50mg or 100mg strengths, as well as in 100mg slow-release capsules. The standard dose of Macrobid for adults:- To prevent a UTI. 50mg to 100mg can be taken once a day at night.
- To treat a UTI. Either 50mg tablets taken four times a day or 100mg slow-release tablets taken twice a day are prescribed. A higher dose of 100mg tablets four times a day may be recommended for severe infections.
